Muhlenberg Schools Finance Officer Jeff Travis to Retire, Yonts Resigns as Board Attorney

muhl school board 300POWDERLY, Ky. (8/12/14) — The Muhlenberg County School Board met Monday, Aug. 11 in its regular monthly meeting.

The board began the meeting with some student recognitions.

Muhlenberg North Middle School won first place in the National Jr. Beta Living Literature contest. The Jr. Beta Club's theme was “The Great Gatsby”.

The board also recognized Coach Tracy Hope. Hope coaches the counties archery team. He took his team to Madison, Wis., to compete in the World Archery in Schools World Championships in July.

More than 3,000 archers were present at the competition. Hope's team is ranked 13th in the world. The team's top three shooters were Michael Pride, who ranked 34 out of 1,290 for the overall boys, and seven out of 110 for 10th grade boys; Nicholas Hope, who was ranked 54 out of 1,290 for the overall boys, and ranked nine out of 110 for 10th grade boys; and, Lindsey Winters, who was ranked 108 out of 1135 girls, and 22 out of 99 for 10th grade girls.

The board then reviewed the treasure's report. The ending ledger balance for July was $8,558,602.76. The board owed $612,358 in bond payments and $501,182 in contractor payments. The board voted unanimously to pay the bills.

The superintendent's report stated that current enrollment figures are slightly lower this year than in the past year with enrollment being 4,946 students. The superintendent's office expects this number to climb close to 5,000 in the next few days.

The technology wing opened on time with some students attending classes in the new wing. However, health services and the Coal Academy will have to wait until October to move into their new rooms.

Bremen construction is still not complete as punch list items have not been fully resolved.

Jeff Travis, district finance officer for the past 21 years, announced his retirement at the meeting. Brent Yonts announced his resignation as board attorney, the board accepted his resignation.

The board then approved district assurances for funding. The approval is necessary for the district to receive funding including IDEA, Title I, Title II.

The board then made an administrative change in approving the salary deduction policy. This change simply allows vendors to use board forms to file for salary deductions.

Lastly, the board approved their consent agenda and adjourned.
