OWENSBORO, Ky. (4/16/13) – Tamarack Elementary School is working to develop “great expectations” among all students that they will continue their educations beyond high school by attending college or a technical school. The school has developed a schedule that will ensure that students at all grade levels – kindergarten through fifth grade – will visit a college campus during Tamarack’s “College Week.” For students currently in kindergarten, by the time they leave Tamarack, they will have visited six different college campuses. The schedule is included below.
“The jobs of tomorrow have not even been thought of today,” said TES Principal Allison Coomes. “21st century technology jobs and occupations are requiring skills which are only currently being taught in high school. For our students to have a future and contribute to the workforce, we must change their mindset and ‘raise the bar’ for each student. Creating a mindset of continual learning is becoming a necessity for jobs and careers that can support a family.”
During Tamarack’s “College Week,” each grade level will spend a day on the campus of a college or university, touring facilities, eating a sack lunch on campus, and experiencing the excitement of what the various postsecondary institutions have to offer. “With each year at Tamarack, the students will build a capacity of understanding of the many opportunities that await them beyond high school,” Coomes said.
Vickie Hunter, guidance counselor at TES, accompanied third-grade students on a visit to Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green on Monday, April 15. While on the visit, Tamarack students carried backpacks filled with books, agenda books, paper and pencil, and participated in conversations about personal accountability and responsibility in getting to class on time and being prepared with appropriate materials for learning and studying effectively. “I asked the kids what was different from what they expected, and one thing they said was how classes are in different buildings and how they would need to have their supplies because if they forgot them, they would have to go back to their dorm room and then be late for class. Our conversations and the visit were really tailored around the common misperceptions students have about college – you don’t major in basketball and play all day. We also wanted our students to get the feel of the atmosphere of a university – see the college students, classrooms and facilities. We talked a lot about how important it is to work hard and learn now, so they will be prepared for college-level homework, tests, and ready to take responsibility for their own learning.”
