Hooked on Science - Pool Noodle Marble Run

hooked science 300KENTUCKY (6/27/13) -Looking for something to do with all those extra pool noodles? If so, using a few ingredients from around the house, you can turn a pool noodle into a marble run.
 
INGREDIENTS
•Pool Noodle
•Box Cutter
•Marbles

INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1: Using the box cutter, have an adult, cut the pool noodle, with a hole down the center, in half, lengthwise.
STEP 2: Attach the pool noodle halves to the wall. Make sure the start of the pool noodle marble run is higher when compared to the end of the pool noodle marble run.
STEP 3: Hold a marble at the start of the pool noodle marble run. Release the marble and observe.
 
EXPLANATION
It all starts once you release the marble. Gravity pulls the marble down the first hill. This is kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is energy an object has due to its motion. The potential energy gained by the marble being pushed up the next hill will power the pool noodle marble run through the end. Potential energy is energy stored in an object due to the object’s position. This is the reason why the start of your pool noodle marble run must be higher when compared to the end of your pool noodle marble run. Otherwise, the marble will not have enough energy to make it to the end.
