men at workMUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (10/25/13) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Muhlenberg County crew had a close call yesterday morning as they were setting up a work zone on the Western Kentucky Parkway near Central City.

Just after 7:00 a.m., the crew was setting up a lane restriction when a truck pulling a dolly approached the work zone. As the truck attempted to slow the empty dolly started to fishtail out of control and broke free from the truck. According to witnesses, the dolly flipped several times and hit a guardrail before landing in the median. Fortunately, there were no injuries. The damaged dolly was recovered by a wrecker.

KYTC District 2 Safety Coordinator Shelley Singleton says the incident serves as a reminder that it is important to slow down when you first see work zone signage.

"We were just very fortunate that the dolly didn't hit any of our workers or any other vehicles," Singleton said.

In recent weeks two Transportation Cabinet trucks have been hit by passenger vehicles. One of those crashes resulted in a fatality. During the past three years in Kentucky, 11 people have died and 471 people were injured in highway construction and maintenance work zones. Most of those injuries and fatalities were motorists.
