The Dailey Dose: Nationwide ‘Crush’ on AcoUstiKats

LEXINGTON, Ky. (12/12/13)—A group of UK’s most talented men has everyone talking after making their debut on national television Monday night, and it wasn’t the basketball team. The all male a cappella group at the University of Kentucky, the “AcoUstiKats” brought to the stage of the NBC show “The Sing-Off” a whole new version of “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke.

“I couldn’t tell you one thing from the actual performance because it is all kind of a blur,” said senior and Marketing Director Jeremy Lewis. “After we put our microphones down, we all agreed we left it all on the stage, and none of us remember anything.”

What some of their fans are now calling an “acousticrush”, the group of Kentucky men are amazed at the reaction that they are getting from everyone who was watching.

“We woke up with hundreds of emails in our inbox requesting gigs from every part of the nation,” said Lewis. “We didn’t go on the show cocky or with the goal of winning, we went out there to show what UK had to offer other than basketball.”

That is exactly what they did. Not only did the men have amazing sound, their dance moves left everyone blushing.

“As of today we have more followers on social media than any other college group that has appeared on the show,” said Lewis.“ That is a huge deal to us, these are the best college groups in the nation.”

After posting the cover of Brian McKnight’s song “Back At One,” the artist reached out to the AcoUstiKats.

“It was a beautiful cover and a beautiful arrangement,” said Lewis. “He followed our group's Twitter account, retweeted the song and said that he was officially a fan of us.”

While the AcoUstiKats are “star struck” by some of the artists who have contacted them, they never thought that people would be that way towards them.

“It’s a mixture of honor and a little creepy,” said Lewis laughing when I asked about the overwhelming amount of people who have formed an “acousticrush” on the group. “It’s definitely a lot more than any of us were expecting.”

It is Lewis’s senior year and even though his time as an AcoUstiKat is coming to an end, he isn’t sad but excited for the future of the program.

“We aren’t the success story, we are just the beginning,” said Lewis. “When I leave the group that just means someone else will be able to fill my shoes.”

With multiple gigs being thrown their way from all over the nation, the men have decided that no matter what they will stay true to Kentucky.

“We will always be the AcoUstiKats from Kentucky. If there is ever a conflicting gig, we will always pick the one that is in our state rather than somewhere else,” said Lewis.“ It is all such a blessing, but we will remain incredibly true to Kentucky.”

The group will be coming out with an album at the beginning of next year filled with covers from last year and a few fan request covers, too.

“We will be asking the student body and our social media followers to let us know what song they would like us to cover next,” said Lewis.

After a close battle last night, the AcoUstiKats will take the stage again tonight beginning at 8 p.m. on NBC. However, be careful, you might just form your very own “acousticrush.”
