KSP Post 2 Holiday Enforcement

driver sober1 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (12/23/13) - This holiday season, Kentucky law enforcement will be cracking down on drunken drivers throughout the state during the aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign. The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS), in partnership with the Kentucky State Police and local law enforcement, kicked off the campaign on December 13, 2013. It continues through January 1, 2014.

According to government data, during Christmas and New Year's, 40 percent of all traffic deaths involve alcohol. In just the few days surrounding those two holidays, an average of 304 people die in drunk-driving crashes, states the U.S. Department of Transportation.

To aid in keeping drunken drivers off the road, the KOHS partnered with Mobile Life Solutions to develop a "No DUI Kentucky" application.

The app contains the following:
* A one-touch dial feature to call the Kentucky State Police if a motorist needs to report a drunken driver
* A list of local taxi services, sober ride programs and limousine companies by working with the caller's Global Positioning System
* A link to Kentucky's HERO designated driver campaign website
* Information on laws and penalties for driving while impaired and the cost of getting a DUI
* A Blood Alcohol Concentration calculator
* A feature that turns the camera into impairment goggles
* A feature to select a designated driver

The "No DUI Kentucky" app is available to download for free in the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and the Windows Phone Store. It can also be downloaded at www.DriveSoberKY.com. Georgia and Wisconsin are the only states to date that have similar applications.

DUI APP

Locally, KSP troopers and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers will concentrate their holiday enforcement efforts on high traffic areas such as interstates and parkways, along with high crash locations. They will be observing for individuals exhibiting unsafe driving behaviors, such as, speeding, reckless driving, and driving impaired.

This enforcement period will be highlighted by troopers and officers aggressively targeting those people who choose not to wear seatbelts or use child safety restraints. "It is our intent that all efforts and measures be taken to ensure the safety of our motoring public throughout the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Please make safe and responsible choices when driving this holiday season so that you can spend quality time with your loved ones; rather than spending it with the Kentucky State Police," commented Captain Bobby D. Murray.

Motorists around the Post 2 District can expect to see traffic safety checkpoints at pre-approved locations. The KSP utilizes traffic safety checkpoints to promote safety for motorists and to provide a deterrent for those who violate laws contained in the Kentucky Revised Statutes.

The intent of a traffic safety checkpoint is to provide a highly visible, public safety service focusing on vehicular equipment deficiencies, confirming appropriate registration and insurance of vehicles, and the valid licensing of drivers. Violations of law or other public safety issues that arise shall be addressed.

For traffic safety checkpoint locations in your area, you may refer to the web site:
www.kentuckystatepolice.org/posts/press/post2_checkpoints.htm

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers may remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel, and license number if possible.

Post 2 serves the following counties: Caldwell, Christian, Crittenden, Hopkins, Muhlenberg, Todd, and Webster.
