felix martin1 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (1/21/14) — The Felix E. Martin Jr. Foundation is accepting Community Grant Program applications until Feb. 7 for mid-March awards. The next Community Grants Program application deadline will be May 6 for June awards. In the 2013-2014 Fiscal year, the Martin Foundation has committed $200,000 to be awarded for local projects which support educational, civic and cultural needs in Muhlenberg County. The Foundation reviews grants quarterly and has awarded more than $100,000 during the current fiscal year, leaving approximately $100,000 available to be awarded through the end of June 2014.

Recent grant recipients have included Madisonville Community College, who is pursuing the construction of a hydroponics greenhouse to be located adjacent to the West Campus of Muhlenberg County High School. Three of the most recent grant awards will support summer programs for Muhlenberg County youth. Central City Convention Center was awarded funding to support a FitKids Summer Camp for middle school aged children, Baptist Healthcare Madisonville will again host the High School Rural Scholars Summer Program encouraging students to pursue medical careers in Muhlenberg County, and scholarships will be made available for four middle school-aged boys to attend the McCallie School Sports Camp in Chattanooga, Tenn. Muhlenberg Community Hospital and the Muhlenberg County Health Department have both received grants to support services offered as part of the MOVE! Muhlenberg County program – a series of classes promoting weight loss & healthy lifestyles. A grant was also awarded to Sanctuary, Inc. to be used for the establishment of a permanent office in Muhlenberg County supporting local victims of domestic violence.

The Community Grants program was established to respond to funding needs of local organizations. Since its establishment in 2008, the Community Grants program has awarded nearly $2 million to support local programs doing important work to address the needs of Muhlenberg County. Preference is given to programs which directly address areas that have been identified as key needs: Economic Development, Youth Services, Substance Abuse Services and Health/Human Services. Grants are available to qualifying non-profit organizations, churches, schools and government entities.

Applications and additional details about the Community Grants program can be found on the Foundation’s website or by calling the Foundation offices at (270) 977-9194.
