imagesUNITED STATES (2/11/14) ― Shirley Temple Black, who brightened people’s spirits as a dimpled, curly-haired child star during the 1930s, died late Monday evening at the age of 85 at her home outside San Francisco.

Temple was known for her singing and tap dancing, and shined in eyes of Depression-era moviegoers.

Starring in movies such as “Little Miss Maker” and “On the Good Ship Lollipop,” Temple became a nationwide sensation. Little girls idolized her and mothers fashioned their daughters after her.

Temple retired in early 1960s from the entertainment industry and entered her next big interest in politics. She became the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana and later U.S. chief of protocol in the 1970s. She also served ambassador to Czechoslovakia during President George H. W. Bush in the late 1980s.

In 1972, Temple underwent a successful breast cancer surgery and became one of the very first activist for breast cancer.

Her autobiography, “Child Star” became a best-seller in 1988.

Temple starred in more than 40 movies and was figured in the American Film Institute’s list of 50 Greatest Screen Legends.
