PhoneScam 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (4/3/2014) — The Owensboro Police Department continues to receive complaints from community members pertaining to fraudulent solicitations by persons unknown to them.

In an effort to keep our community safe, we are releasing the following information.

Recent reports of fraud pertain to the caller stating they are with Publisher’s Clearing House and notifying the victim that they have won a large sum of money. The suspect asks the victim to send money to cover taxes before the winnings can be given.

A separate incident involved a caller attempting to purchase merchandise from a victim. The caller sent a check for an amount over the sales price and requested the victim to return a portion of that money. The original check was not valid.

Here are a few tips to remember to prevent you from becoming a victim of fraud:

  • Never give out your personal information to anyone (i.e. your name, date of birth, social security number, bank account number, credit/debit card number) that you cannot identify or verify.

  • Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

  • Call police if you feel that you have been a victim of fraud.
