About National Columnists Day:

April 18 was chosen as the annual date for National Columnists Day in memory of well-known columnist and 1944 Pulitzer Prize winner Ernie Pyle, according to National Calendar Day.

Pyle was born on August 3, 1900 and died in combat on a Pacific Island on April 18, 1945.

Winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1944, he was an American journalist known for his columns as a roving correspondent for the Scripps Howard newspaper chain, especially during World War II, reporting both from Europe and the Pacific.

Enjoying his following in some 300 newspapers, Pyle was among the best-known American war correspondents in Europe.
