“Between the Rows,” is Barnett’s first fiction novel.

“It’s more of a crime novel, but my sister calls it a ‘love story with a twist of marijuana.’ The characters are fictional, but the backbone of the story is all true,” said Barnett. “The book takes place after a war vet David Wayne Russell makes his way back home to Kentucky after he leaves Vietnam and finds himself in a risky proposition.”

As part of Barnett’s inspiration to write her novel, she took what she knew about the “Cornbread Mafia” and applied the facts to her fictional characters.

“My family didn’t have any part in pot farming,” said Barnett. “However, we grew up close to it. Families were hurt by bad decisions, but it didn’t mean they were bad people. In fact, they were actually non-violent people, who got caught up in a bad situation.”

Barnett said growing up during that time, there was more stigma on marijuana than there is today.

“I took what I knew about what happened and wrote about it,” said Barnett. "It only took me 30 years to write it.”

When war vet David Wayne Russell was on his way home from Vietnam, he knew his fiancé, Libby, had pretty much mapped out their future together. But before he got home, he made a stop in California to visit with an old Army buddy, Doug Campbell.

Doug presented David with a risky proportion of using his Kentucky farm to harvest marijuana and get rich while doing it. David ignored the idea and headed home, where Libby begins to push him to be something he doesn’t want to be.

David begins to feel that he has no other choice but to marry Libby and live out the life her and her judge father want him to. However, when the judge remarries and his attractive step-daughter begins to complicate things. Libby wants David to buy out her father’s farm instead of waiting for her inheritance.

Suddenly, in need for big money, David begins to rethink Doug’s suggestion and makes the decision that will lead him down a different and much darker road.

“When I started writing the book, I let my family and friends read it and they loved it,” said Barnett. “Now, it’s been published, all of a sudden its really exploding. I’ve never written anything in my life other than a letter. But, I can write a really good letter.”

Barnett said she made a name change to help inspire interest from multiple generations.

“My real name is Phyllis Ann,” said Barnett. “But, I dropped the name Phyllis because I wanted to reach a younger crowd, and Phyllis just sounds old.”

“Between the Rows” is a compelling tale of one man’s struggle to keep a secret as he faces the consequences of one fateful choice.

“The book is short and reads easy,” said Barnett. “The characters are very believable and there are a lot of bad words… I had to make it realistic.”
