Western Kentucky State Fair Will Host First Annual Ms. Plus Pageant

tiffanyTiffany FosterHOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (6/30/14) — The Western Kentucky State Fair has added the First Annual Ms. Plus to the event calendar this year.

“I saw something in the local newspaper about them adding a plus-size event to the Western Kentucky State Fair,” said contestant Tiffany Foster. “I got some text messages from my friends asking if I was going to do it.”

Foster said she has a pretty big support system.

“At first, I was leaning towards no,” said Foster. “But, I posted a status on my Facebook to see what kind of response I would get and before I knew it, I had 150 likes and comments telling me I should do it. Then, a good friend of mine, which runs the Crofton, Ky. website posted on their site, saying they would sponsor me.”

Foster said at first, there was only supposed to be a formal wear competition, but recently another competition was added.

“At first it was only formal wear,” said Foster. “But, they have added causal wear and Cato’s in Oak Grove is providing the outfits and other things for the contestants.”

Contestants must be at least 16 to 30 years of age and a size 14 plus.

“It’s different; I’ve never done anything like this. I’m excited,” said Foster. “I am glad they are letting plus-size girls do this, now. There are so many stereotypes, if your big, you have let yourself go or you don’t care about how you look… that’s not true at all. There are girls out there, who are bigger, but that is just one characteristic about them. There is more to a person, than just looks.”

Even though Foster isn’t in it to win it, she still wants to set an example and send a positive message to plus-size girls.

“I’m not in it to win it,” said Foster. “I just want to have fun and get dressed up. This whole thing is sending a good message to the community and to girls who are considered plus-size. When people hear the words ‘plus-size,’ people automatically think, ‘fat’ or ‘big.’ To me, big girls can be pretty, too. They can take care of themselves, go out there and have a good time and strut their stuff. So, I’m ready to see, what all of us can do.”

Foster said getting ready for a pageant is no joke and all the contestants that have signed up are all beautiful.

“I’m not really a pageant type of girl, but this is no joke,” said Foster. “I just got my hair did and we tried on our outfits the other day, which all the contestants looked beautiful. We are supposed to have three stops and one minute on the walk-way. I don’t really know what I am doing, this is my first pageant.”

Foster encourages young girls to be comfortable, with who they are.

“I wish this pageant didn’t have to separated,” said Foster. “We aren’t all made the same. God made us all different for a reason. So, you don’t have to be a size two or six, to be a beauty queen. You can be a size 16 plus and still be beautiful, at least this is what I want the community to take away from this pageant.”

The First Annual Ms. Plus WKSF will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2 at the Western Kentucky State Fair, located at 2810 Richard Street Hopkinsville. For more information, visit http://www.westernkystatefair.org/ orhttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Western-Kentucky-State-Fair/105454002834107.
