7th Grader Survives Transplant; Family Needs Support from Community

brycepower 300HOPKINS COUNTY, KY (1/10/12)—Bryce Ramsey, a 7th grader at James Madison Middle School in Madisonville, KY, has survived a critical and potentially life-threatening surgery, yet his family is left trying to cover the costs of hotel stays, medical bills, gas, food, and more.

As friends, family members, and supporters report to SurfKY News of the brave and kind-hearted young man, Bryce underwent an entire kidney transplant following a lengthy wait on a donor list. Yet, after receiving a call confirming that a kidney was available the first week of January, the procedure was a “go.”

Following the surgery, which took place on Wednesday, January 4th, doctors and medical personnel at the hospital were glad to report that everything had went as planned. As of this report, Bryce is doing well and the family has received nothing but positive updates since the operation.

However, in the wake of the procedure, the Ramsey family is left with bills for medical procedures, hotel stays, gas, food, and more. Though Bryce’s mother and father, Brenda and Bruce Ramsey, were advised to stay at the nearby Ronald McDonald House, the waiting list is lengthy—hence the hotel bills.

However, with the support of our community, Bryce and his family may be able to face this hardship with as little stress as possible.

As supporters report to SurfKY News, a charitable account has been opened with US Bank in Madisonville in Bryce’s name: the Bryce Ramsey Fund. While Bruce Ramsey will be returning to work soon, Bryce’s mother, Brenda, will be staying within or near the hospital for the next 3 weeks. Therefore, donations that go into the account will not only help to cover existing costs, but will also help to cover the remaining stay.

As supporter and area coach Josh Steele notes of the family’s situation, “Bryce is an awesome kid that deserves nothing but the best. As a community, we believe that we can pull together and lighten the load which has been placed on this wonderful family. If anyone would like to make a donation, please visit a local US Bank. Remember, ‘A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.’”

If donating by check, please make them out to the “Bryce Ramsey Fund.”

Additionally, those with children attending James Madison Middle School in Madisonville, KY will have a chance to show their support for a mere $1. In partnering with supporters and friends of the family, the school will allow students to wear any blue shirt they want on Friday, January 13th, for the cost of $1.

The donations will be collected during the first hour of class and turned into Mr. Doyle. The funds will then be deposited into the aforementioned US Bank fund.
