BOWLING GREEN, KY (4/27/12) – Western Kentucky University’s 171st Commencement will include a graduate ceremony, three undergraduate ceremonies, three regional campus ceremonies and other recognition events.
“WKU’s commencement ceremonies and activities continue to increase to accommodate our growing numbers of graduates,” Registrar Freida Eggleton said. “Ceremonies held at the regional campuses provide special recognition for those students who have completed the majority of their courses at those campuses.”
WKU will be awarding degrees and certificates to about 2,130 spring graduates. Approximately 500 additional students are expected to complete their degrees this summer.
Commencement activities will begin May 3 with WKU-Glasgow’s second Graduand Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre, 115 E. Main St. in Glasgow. Graduand is a term of status referring to a student who has completed his or her studies at the university, but not yet graduated in a formal ceremony.
WKU’s Commencement weekend will include a graduate ceremony on May 11, three undergraduate ceremonies on May 12 and ceremonies at regional campuses in Owensboro and Elizabethtown/Radcliff/Fort Knox on May 13.
The graduate ceremony at 5 p.m. May 11 will include 11 recipients of the doctoral degree in educational leadership as well as the presentation of the John D. Minton Award. WKU President Gary Ransdell will deliver remarks. The ceremony will be webcast on WKU Sports.tv Streaming Video available at http://www.wkusports.com/.

Members of WKU’s Class of 1962, who are participating in the Golden Anniversary Club reunion May 11-12, will be recognized at the 9:30 a.m. ceremony. The Ogden Foundation Scholar will be recognized at the 2 p.m. ceremony, and 22 members of the WKU Army ROTC program will be commissioned as second lieutenants at the 6 p.m. ceremony.

In addition to WKU ceremonies, The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky will recognize 47 students in the Class of 2012, its fifth graduating class. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. May 12 at Van Meter Hall. Guest speaker will be John D. Minton Jr., chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court.
