BOWLING GREEN, KY (11/5/12) – The Kentucky Engagement Conference (KEC), hosted by Western Kentucky University and organized by the WKU ALIVE Center and WKU Institute for Citizenship & Social Responsibility, will take place Thursday and Friday (Nov. 8-9) at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center.
This year’s theme is A New Era of Engagement: The Civic Health of the Commonwealth.
The conference will feature three keynote speakers: Martha Kanter, Erica Williams and Nicholas Longo. Kanter, Under Secretary in the United States Department of Education, will provide a national perspective of education and community involvement. Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes will introduce Kanter and also will discuss Civic Health in Kentucky during her breakout session.
Williams, Founder of Society by Design, will present new and innovative ways to promote civic engagement among students and community members.
Longo, Director of Global Studies and Associate Professor of Public and Community Service Studies at Providence University, will highlight the importance of students in strengthening our society and ways to advance student leadership and engagement.
“I am looking forward to hearing Martha Kanter speak at the Kentucky Engagement Conference because she is an eloquent speaker that talks about specifics rather than abstracts,” said Danielle Adams, a WKU senior from New York who heard Kanter at the Department of Defense World-Wide Education Symposium.
The KEC will gather academic administrators, faculty, staff, and students to discuss and share topics alongside the conference theme such as civic health, sustainability, partnerships, academic activism, student-centered engagement, technology, and more.
Kanter and Grimes will be available to speak with media before the start of the conference at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Carroll Knicely Center Room 110.
