According to Wilkerson, there have been 87 car accidents at the intersection of Smallhouse and Cave Mill Road in the past 4 years.
“This intersection has been a safety concern,” Buchanon said.
A stoplight has been placed at the intersection to prevent long lines of waiting during rush hour as well as to help prevent accidents.
According to the city of Bowling Green’s website, the new section of roadway was built in a portion of what is now parking lot at the LDS church, with the existing Smallhouse Road in front of Massey Springs being permanently closed. Sassafras Street's access to Smallhouse will also close, making it a dead end.
The ribbon cutting took place at approximately 2 p.m. on Monday.
