'Songs Against Slavery' Concert to Raise Awareness

songs against slaveryBOWLING GREEN, Ky. (4/19/13) – Since a group of Western Kentucky University students attended the Christian conference called "Passion" in January, they have created a chapter of the International Justice Mission on campus and are seeking to raise awareness about modern-day slavery.
 
On April 27, they will be holding a benefit concert called "Songs Against Slavery" at Crossland Community Church. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will feature Nashville artists Steve Moakler and Jake Ousley. The concert will cost $15 to attend. All proceeds will go to victims of human trafficking.
 
"There are currently 27 million people in slavery around the world and a large portion of those enslaved in sex trafficking reside in the United States," Kimberly Cooper, WKU IJM Treasurer, said. "Recently, a woman was arrested in Bowling Green for attempting to sell her thirteen year old daughter into sex slavery. There are more slaves today than ever in human history, and it is happening in our own town. Songs Against Slavery is bringing this act of injustice to light."
 
The concert will also feature a guest speaker from Thistle Farms, which is a residential program and social enterprise for women who have survived prostitution, trafficking and addiction. Thistle Farms and Miriam Designs will be selling jewelry, lotions, perfumes and other products handmade by victims.
 
"This night will open your eyes to the world of modern day slavery and help those who are currently enslaved and those who have been rescued as well," Cooper said. "We hope that you will join us for the evening and as a part of our movement as we take a stand for freedom and seek to bring an end to injustice."
