WKU to Confer more than 2,000 Degrees at 173rd Commencement

wku1 300BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (4/29/13) – Western Kentucky University will confer degrees to more than 2,000 graduates in four ceremonies during its 173rd Commencement on May 10-11 at Diddle Arena.
 
WKU will confer 395 master’s degrees, six doctor of education degrees, six specialist degrees and 40 graduate certificates and will present the John D. Minton Award in the graduate ceremony at 5 p.m. May 10.
 
In three undergraduate ceremonies on May 11, WKU will confer 135 associate degrees, 1,475 baccalaureate degrees and 22 undergraduate certificates. The 9:30 a.m. ceremony will include Potter College of Arts & Letters and University College as well as recognition of members of the Class of 1963 who will be on campus for the Golden Anniversary Club Reunion; the 2 p.m. ceremony will include College of Health and Human Services and Gordon Ford College of Business as well as the recognition of Ogden Foundation Scholar Daniel Burton, a management major from Louisville; and the 6 p.m. ceremony will include College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and Ogden College of Science and Engineering.
 
WKU President Gary Ransdell will deliver remarks at the graduate and undergraduate ceremonies. The undergraduate ceremonies also will include the parade of international flags, recognition of honor graduates and faculty award winners, and the commissioning of 11 Army ROTC graduates as second lieutenants. Each graduate also will be given a Class of 2013 WKU red towel to wave at the end of the ceremony.
 
The new Augenstein Alumni Center will be open for tours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 11 for graduates and their families.
 
The undergraduate commencement ceremonies will be broadcast live by WKU PBS and all ceremonies will be webcast live on WKU Sports.tv streaming video available at www.wkusports.com. Gatton Academy graduation
In addition to WKU ceremonies, the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky will recognize 72 students in the Class of 2013, its sixth graduating class. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. May 11 at Van Meter Hall. Guest speaker will be Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers.
 
Regional campus ceremonies
 
WKU’s regional campuses also will have Commencement events starting with WKU-Glasgow’s fourth Graduand recognition on May 2.
 
The ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre, 115 E. Main St. in Glasgow. Guest speaker will be Kentucky Chief Justice John D. Minton Jr. Graduand is a term of status referring to a student who has completed his or her studies at the university, but not yet graduated in a formal ceremony.
 
WKU-Owensboro will host a commencement ceremony at 6 p.m. May 9 at the RiverPark Center, 101 Daviess St., Owensboro. Speakers will include Forrest Roberts, director of research for the International Bluegrass Music Museum and a former member of WKU’s Board of Regents; and student Jacob Bryant of Daviess County, who is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education.
 
WKU-Elizabethtown/Radcliff/Fort Knox will host a commencement ceremony at 3 p.m. (Eastern time) May 12 at the Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center, located at John Hardin High School, 384 W.A. Jenkins Road, Elizabethtown. Guest speaker will be Dr. Dean May, head of WKU’s Department of Social Work.

 *Master of Social Work Ceremony, 2 p.m. May 10 at Mass Media and Technology Hall Auditorium.
 *Educational Leadership Doctoral Commencement Reception. 2 p.m. May 10 at Gary Ransdell Hall.
 *Hilltopper ROTC Commissioning Ceremony, 3 p.m. May 10 at Downing University Center Auditorium.
 *Dental Hygiene Ceremony, 5 p.m. May 10 at Knicely Conference Center.
 *Outstanding Black Graduates Ceremony, 7 p.m. May 10 at Van Meter Hall.
 *Communication Department Graduation Breakfast. 8 a.m. May 11 at Downing University Center, room 226.
 *Augenstein Alumni Center Open House, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. May 11 at Augenstein Alumni Center.
 *Bachelor of Social Work Reception, noon May 11 at Academic Complex, room 213.
