WKU Has Grand Opening on the Commons at Cravens

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (2/1/13) – The fourth floor of the Raymond Cravens Library on the campus of Western Kentucky University was recently renovated. The area, known as “The Commons” now features 28 lab computers, email stations, printers, copiers, scanners, charging stations, wireless capability, collaboration booths, flexible seating options and whiteboards.

The renovations began in late September and ended in December. Though the area has been open since the beginning of the semester, a grand opening was held yesterday at 4:30 where President Gary Ransdell, Provist Gordon Emslie, Dean of Libraries Connie Foster and graduate student Mark Reeves spoke.

“I’m just thrilled to see the university making an investment to make our library a top rate facility,” Reeves said.

Drinks and finger foods were served at the grand opening as attendees fellowshipped until the speakers spoke. During this time, a WKU student brass ensemble played. WKU’s mascot, Big Red, was also present.

One noticeable change to the area is a section of the wall featuring books halfway sticking out.

“The library books of the past disappear into the wall to be replaced with this information commons concept,” Emslie said.

Emslie said he hopes to see students using the Commons often and “not just on finals week.”
