BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (4/25/13) – Pastor Todd Burpo spoke on Wednesday night, April 24, at the Sloan Convention Center at a book signing. Burpo is the pastor of Crossroads Wesleyan Church in Imperial, Neb. Burpo is also the author of the popular Christian book “Heaven is For Real” which has sold 10.2 million copies worldwide.
“Heaven is For Real” recounts Burpo’s son, Colton’s testimony of having an experience in heaven during emergency surgery after his appendix burst. Colton claims to have gone to heaven and spoken to Jesus along with other Biblical figures and then Jesus sent him back to answer Todd’s prayers.
To begin his talk, Burpo showed a short video recounting the book’s story in case those present hadn’t read it. He then spoke for about thirty minutes on various things related to the story as well as offering a sermon-like message.
“Nothing in the book is not true as far as I know,” Burpo said during his talk.
He said that he and his wife, Sonja, were very precise in writing the book. If they didn’t know something for sure, it was not included. The events of the book happened when Colton was 4-years-old and is now 13. Burpo said that some have asked why he didn’t write the book sooner to which he said that it was hard to do in light of the pain he had had to see his son endure.
“To bury a child is probably the biggest fear anyone has,” he said.
Burpo asked the audience if they had ever dealt with the question of why bad things happen to good people. He responded to this by saying, “Satan is for real and he hates you.”
Burpo said that his son was sent to Heaven and back in order to bring a message to him. He said that when Colton was younger, Colton would run around the house telling him, “Jesus told me to tell you…” He said that he has a commission to go and tell people about the things that have happened.
“Heaven is For Real” is set to release as a film around Easter 2014.
Following Burpo’s talk, a video was shown of Colton singing “Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone)” with a band. Burpo closed with a question and answer time and then attendees lined up to have their books signed.
