DELO Grants Almost $50,000 in Study Abroad Awards

wku logo grayblackBOWLING GREEN, Ky. (8/16/13) – An award developed by WKU Study Away and the Division of Extended Learning & Outreach (DELO) helped 134 students participating in 26 Faculty Led Study Abroad (FLSA) programs throughout the 2012-2013 academic year. A total of $32,759 was divided among 70 students taking a Summer Sessions or a spring semester course. At total of $17,000 was divided among 55 students taking a Winter Term course.

WKU Study Away and DELO created the award to encourage students to participate in Faculty Led Study Abroad programs. The award helps students share with others how a study abroad experience can make a positive impact on their personal and academic success.

According to Study Away Director Jerry Barnaby, students must propose a project that will enhance their study abroad experience and encourage other WKU students to participate in future FLSA programs.

“Students get very creative with their proposals,” Barnaby said. “This award forces them to push themselves to do more, which makes their experience even greater.”

Barnaby said that student projects ranged from a travel blog to document travels through Amsterdam and Paris museums to combining art from the trip with music and creating a community musical performance at the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

Ian Dowty is a junior from Valley Center, Kan., majoring in journalism and broadcasting. Before his course in Italy, he interviewed fellow WKU students to get ideas of their “dream activities.” While abroad he took videos of himself participating in those activities.

“I wanted to show them that dreams are possible,” Dowty said.

Students agree that the award expands their opportunities to experience the world around them.

“DELO has allowed me the opportunity to see things I had always dreamed of seeing,” said Mary Allison Salmon, a senior from Martinsville, Ind. “Without their help this opportunity would not have been made possible. This is something that will stay with me for a life time, and if there is one thing I can encourage others to do is study abroad and travel.”

DELO will offer additional FLSA opportunities for Winter Term 2014. Students must complete an online application and submit their project proposal by Oct. 4 for priority consideration. The final deadline is Oct. 23. Awards will be made based on fund availability.
