Veterans Upward Bound Graduate Wins Scholarship Award

vet upward bound 300BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (8/20/13) – Philip Parsons of Lewisburg was recently selected as the winner of a $1,000 scholarship granted by the National Association of Veterans Upward Bound.

Parsons, a veteran of the U.S. Army, graduated from the WKU Veterans Upward Bound program in the summer of 2012 and is pursuing an associate degree in human services at Hopkinsville Community College.

Parsons was one of 11 students in the country to receive this award and is the ninth Veterans Upward Bound student from WKU to win this prestigious scholarship in the past 10 years.
“We’re very proud of Philip,” said Rick Wright, VUB’s coordinator. “His achievement reflects very positively upon the quality of our program and the caliber of our students.”

WKU is one of 51 Veterans Upward Bound projects across the United States and the only one in Kentucky. Since coming to WKU in 1992, VUB has helped more than 2,500 veterans get admitted to colleges, universities and technical schools. VUB is a non-profit, grant-funded project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. It caters primarily to low-income veterans and veterans who are first-generation college students.
