WKU Faculty Member Receives USAID Grant to Continue Research and Conservation Work in Peru

wku gray black borderBOWLING GREEN, KY (9/23/13) – As part of his work with the American Climber Science Program (ACSP), Dr. John All, associate professor of geography at WKU, has been awarded a $100,000 grant to continue his research and conservation work in the Cordillera Blanca of Peru.

The grant, “Tropical Andean Climate Change Adaptation and Ecosystem Services Monitoring,” focuses on how climate change in this arid region is impacting local mountain people’s ability to access clean water, how it affects grazing and fire behavior in the mountains, and how local communities can best adapt to these climate changes. Funding comes from the Climate Change Resilience Development Project, run by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

ACSP members under the direction of Dr. All -- volunteers donating their expertise, time and money -- have just completed the third year of pioneering field research in the high Cordillera Blanca, setting the foundation for this expanded work by climbers and scientists. Over the next year, the USAID grant enables Dr. All to work closely with Huascaran National Park and leading Peruvian and U.S. universities.

The grant will be used for travel expenses for WKU students and faculty, travel expenses for Peruvian graduate students from multiple universities, fencing to keep cattle out of parts of the park, hiring translators fluent in Spanish and Quechua from the local area to assist WKU students when they are conducting interviews, meteorological equipment, and two special workshops in the towns of Caraz and Huaraz -- one for international scientists studying mountain climate change and adaptation and one for local stakeholders.
