WKU Mastermind Chess Club Building Champion in Region

Chess ClubBOWLING GREEN, Ky. (2/18/14) – For the past five years, the WKU MasterMind Chess Club has been spreading the mind sport of chess across the region with participating schools growing to more than 30 programs in 15 counties.

“We build champions,” said Samuel J Hunt, founder of WKU MasterMind Chess Club and a student in the educational leadership doctoral program.

Recently, local scholastic chess programs competed in the Kentucky state regional championships. Of all the programs where the WKU MasterMind students were involved, no one finished less than fifth place.

Stuart Kernohan, a Bowling Green Junior High School student coached by Hunt, finished first overall, going undefeated in five games for the third year in a row.

Players from Potter-Gray Elementary School qualified for Kentucky state team championships along with Bowling Green Junior High School, both coached by WKU freshman John Marcsik.

In the SOKY All-girls chess championships sponsored by WKU MasterMind, Ruthie Kesri, also from Bowling Green Junior High School, went undefeated to win the title for the third year in a row.

“This helps us build on the champion spirit of the region in another way,” Hunt said, “one that promotes and highlights the excellence of mental exercise and cognitive excellence.”

The 2013 WKU MasterMind Open attracted 225 entries from K-12, college and adult players from 45 schools. Nine states were represented from as far away as Detroit, Kansas City and Atlanta. Expectations for this year’s event, Apr. 11-13 at WKU’s Knicely Conference Center, are especially high with the inclusion of the WKU MasterMind Business and Leadership Master Class.

The Master Class is supported by the WKU Educational Leadership Doctoral Program, Gordon Ford College of Business and WKU President Gary Ransdell. It brings together world-class, international business leaders who will speak on the confluence of leadership, business, and neuroscience along with various research presentations by Gatton Academy and WKU Honors College students. Individual tickets are available for $75 each. Twelve complimentary tickets will be provided to business sponsors.

See website for additional information or contact Samuel Hunt at (918) 809-6278.
