WARREN COUNTY, Ky. (5/15/14) — Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College will be hosting what has become an annual event for the summer, Chef Camp for Kids.
This year 80 campers, ages 8 to 12 years old, will be learning cooking skills at Culinary Arts Center of the College.
This year’s camp runs 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. each day, June 9-13. The camp will be located at the College’s Main Campus, 1845 Loop Drive in Bowling Green
The session involves the campers in cooking, sanitation, safety in the kitchen and nutrition focusing on health eating and being physically active.
“The children seem to really enjoy what they’re doing here,” said Lisa Hunt, an associate professor in the culinary arts program at the college.
Also the campers learn the history of chefs and cooking utensils, like hotel pans, and the need-to-know core subjects such as math.
“We try to teach them bits and pieces,” Hunt said. “If you stay on one thing too long, they’ll get bored.”
During the session, the young people prepare dishes such as pizza from scratch, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken salad pitas and baked fish and wild rice.
Hunt said the equipment the students use is different from what they use at home. The equipment is bigger, faster and hotter than the everyday appliances found in a normal kitchen, she said.
The cost of the camp is $150.00 per child. For information or to register your child for this year’s Chef Camp call Randy San at (270) 901-1035.
