WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (3/6/13) – Webster County FFA and Webster County 4-H will be receiving some additional funding thanks to the efforts of local farmer, Paul Tapp, and “America’s Farmers Grow Communities.”
The America’s Farmers campaign is an advocacy program celebrating U.S. farmers through communications, awards and special programs that highlight the importance of modern American agriculture.
“Grow Communities”, provides farmers in eligible counties the chance to win a $2,500 donation for a local nonprofit organization of their choice. To further support counties declared natural disaster areas by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) due to the drought this year, winning farmers in these counties can direct twice the amount of money, $5,000, to the organization of their choosing.
Webster County was declared a disaster area by the USDA, giving Tapp the opportunity to choose two organizations to receive $2,500 donations. Tapp selected the Webster County FFA and Webster County 4-H.
“I am very excited to be investing money in the future, which is these kids,” said Tapp.
Webster County FFA will use this donation for travel expenses for students to attend competitions, an expense not covered by the Webster County School District. This will lessen the amount FFA must raise from parents and supporters to pay for travel.
Webster County 4-H plans to use this donation for a senior 4-H member scholarship, 4-H camp scholarship, free workshops, day camps, and 4-H club supplies.
“It is truly a blessing the Tapp Family chose 4-H to receive the $2,500 award from the Monsanto Fund donation program,” said UK Extension Agent Wade Raymer. “4-H will be able to use the $2,500 for camp scholarships, workshops, day camps, National 4-H competition and to improve the 4-H shooting sports program in Webster County.”
This year, the Monsanto Fund will invest nearly $6 million in rural America through Grow Communities, which includes double donations for counties impacted by the historic drought.
In Kentucky, $160,000 is being given across 32 counties.
America’s Farmers Grow Communities is sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic branch of Monsanto Company, to partner with farmers in helping them positively impact their communities. This program is part of the Monsanto Fund’s overall effort to strengthen rural America.
