Apollo AFJROTC Unit, Instructors Honored

air force jr rotc 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (4/26/13) – The Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps at Apollo High School has been selected for the Distinguished Unit Award with Merit for the 2012-13 school year – the highest unit recognition that can be earned.

The national award recognizes Air Force Junior ROTC units that have performed above and beyond normal expectations, distinguishing themselves through outstanding service to their school and community while meeting the Air Force Junior ROTC mission of producing better citizens for America. The Apollo High School unit is one of 64 in the nation, and one of only two in Kentucky, to achieve this level of honor.

In a letter of commendation, U.S. Air Force Colonel Matthew G. Anderer, director of the Air Force JROTC program, said the award recognizes “the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, contributions of the instructors as mentors, and the support of your school and local community.”

In addition, Apollo High School AFJROTC instructors Col. Edgar Paul and CMSgt. Franklin Smith were presented Outstanding Instructor Awards in recognition of “setting the highest example of Air Force Core Values, which are crucial to the success of the AFROTC mission.”

The objectives of the Junior ROTC program are to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship and life skills; promote community service; instill responsibility, character, and self-discipline through character education, and to provide instruction in air and space fundamentals. Enrollment is open to all young people who are in the ninth grade or higher, physically fit, and are citizens or nationals of the United States.

For more information, contact the Air Force Junior ROTC department at Apollo High School, (270) 852-7100. The Apollo JROTC program is under the leadership of Senior Aerospace Science Instructor Edgar Paul, Colonel USAF (Retired), and Aerospace Science Instructor Franklin Smith, Chief Master Sergeant USAF (Retired).
