First Responders Honored at Ceremony

felix flagGREENVILLE, KY (9/30/13) – The Green River Fire Association Honor Guard honored the men and women that have given all to save the lives of others during an emotional ceremony Saturday, Sept. 28 at Felix E. Martin Jr. Hall in Greenville. The memorial service was dedicated to all first responders.

The ceremony featured opening prayer by Charlie O'Neal of the Air Evac, which lost three members of its crew in June to a helicopter crash in Clay County.

Much of the ceremony revolved around the first responders, who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center towers in New York.

Muhlenberg County Sheriff Curtis McGehee also spoke during the ceremony remembering that all branches of law enforcement, fire and rescue and dispatch are called upon daily.

"I am reminded that law enforcement is not a career," he said, "but a calling."

McGehee told his fellow first responders, "It is a privilege to serve with you."

Representatives from fire service, law enforcement, communications, emergency services and the military were joined by a bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" played during a slideshow of some of the heroes of 9/11.
