WKU receives Hometown Hero Award from American Red Cross

wku1 300BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (10/28/13) -WKU received the “Growing by Leaps and Bounds” Hometown Hero Award from the Tennessee Valley Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross.

Tennessee Valley Blood Services Region works with thousands of volunteers to help save lives and selects a handful of local volunteers to be honored as “Hometown Heroes.” Winners were honored with a luncheon and awards ceremony earlier this month.

In one year, WKU increased its collection by nearly 200 units of life-saving blood. Their outstanding contributions helped them beat MTSU in a competition to raise the most blood donations.

At their last blood drive, the WKU team helped the Red Cross collect more than 600 units of blood. Their passion to help the community and unite the Hilltoppers for a good cause has helped save thousands of lives.

“The WKU Team works hard on their drives every year and constantly create new marketing strategies to get the best turnout at their blood drives,” said Red Cross Representative Brittany Durham. “This year, they agreed to host a large fall blood drive, despite the fact they will not be competing with MTSU. They are holding this drive because they care about local patients who rely on these donations to survive every day.”

The Tennessee Valley Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood products to 58 local hospitals and needs about 600 donors every day to give blood products in order to supply the local demand.

WKU blood drive starts Oct. 28: WKU’s 2013 Fall Blood Drive — Save A Life, Starve a Vampire — will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 28, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 29 and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Preston Health and Activities Center.
