Missionaries Seek Local Support to Help Honduran Children

hond1 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (12/25/13) — With just weeks away from another mission trip to Honduras, Jan Dixon and team members Allyssa Hoffman and Woody Sutton of Aaron’s Mission Outreach, prepare themselves for helping those in need.

“We work with Aaron’s Mission Outreach Inc. that is directed by Rev. Darrell Dakin and his wife Darlene,” said Jan Dixon. “I have been going to Honduras since 2008 and what is really cool is I have been able to watch it grow from ground up.”

AMOR is a mission dedicated to spreading the gospel, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, building homes and churches, and providing money for education to those who want to go to school to have a better quality of life.

This past year, Dixon and her team were able to take children's clothes, shoes, medicines, infant formula and Bibles. Dixon was able to fit about 300 pairs of shoes in her luggage but is hoping she will be able to take more this year.hond2 400

“Woody Sutton, who is a Gideon, was able to fit 450 Bibles in his suit cases and bought 200 more when we got there,” said Dixon. “He gave them all away and wished he had more to give out. People were really hungry, wanting to know the Word and before we left, three people gave themselves to the Lord.”

AMOR currently feeds three schools, which averages out to one meal a week or four times a month.

“It’s the only hot meal these kids get,” said Dixon. “Each year, for the last five years, we have had the honor and privilege to be able to personally deliver money collected for the children and take them into town, so they can buy their supplies for school and uniforms. We also have been able to treat them to lunch and ice cream afterwards.”

Starting in January, the new school year will begin in Talanga and Ocotal, Honduras and the children returning or just starting will need tuition along with school supplies, back packs, uniforms and other fees paid before they can enter their classes. The needs total $200 per child.

“This may seem like a very reasonable amount for those of us who spend that much on school supplies and clothes alone,” said Dixon. “However, in that part of Honduras, the average daily wage is about $5. That’s only if the parents are able to find work and earning enough money to send their child to school may also take up to months to save.”

As part of the mission, AMOR opened a free medical clinic in Ocotal that offered medical care and medication free of charge. They were fortunate enough to find a hard-working and dedicated doctor to provide hours of service to ensure the health care for all the people in which he cares for.

“There are people who have to walk three to four hours over the mountain just to get to the doctor,” said Dixon. “Dr. Glenn really cares about these people and works really hard to provide them with the care they need as best as he can.”

Last year, they were able to take an ultrasound machine and an autoclave. This year, Dixon and her team are looking to take dental supplies with them.

“Darlene Dakin said there was a local dentist office in the town over who would come out and do dental work,” said Dixon. “However, they are lacking in some dental tools there at the clinic to do all the work they need to do and we are currently seeking any donations on equipment that some of the dentist offices aren’t utilizing and willing to donate for a good cause.”

Dixon said that she tries her best to do what she can to help provide the necessities the children may need. They are looking to take new or gently worn shoes, both summer and winter clothing, medicines, vitamins, infant formulas, toothpaste, toothbrushes, baby blankets and any money donations to help with the cause.

Any checks that are made out must be turned in by Jan. 15 and made payable to Aaron’s Mission Outreach. Donations are tax deductible and Dixon encourages those to send a picture of themselves or family as well as a note for the child that they would like to help sponsor. In return, Dixon will send notes and pictures from the children as well.
