Henderson Garden Club Plans for 2014 Tour

Henderson Event 300HENDERSON, Ky. (3/5/14) — The Garden Club of Henderson will host Gardens That Swing V, Saturday, June 7.

The semi-annual tour is held in conjunction with the W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival.

The tour runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., rain or shine.

The tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance from Day’s Garden Center and Third Street House in Henderson or from Maxine’s in Evansville. On the day of the tour tickets can be purchased at any garden on the tour or in Central Park where visitors can treat themselves to world-class barbecue and a day of live entertainment.

Gardens on the tour include:

  • Nancy and Jerry Dalton, 1100 Woodland Court – A three-tiered fountain surrounded by boxwood hedges welcome visitors to this lovely hilltop home at the Henderson Country Club. A gazebo for entertaining and a picket fence for repetition of colorful annuals add to the charm of a low maintenance backyard.

  • Amy and Joey Jameson, 13034 Crestwood Court – An outstanding example of how much outdoor entertaining can be packed into a small, intimate area. A fireplace, dining area and outdoor kitchen share space with comfortable modern furniture placed in front of a completely sheltered big screen TV.

  • Dick and Sheila Beaven, 6056 Laurel Trail – A shaded circular path hidden under oak and dogwood trees create the peaceful feel of a mystical secret garden. Also has a great example of raised bed vegetable gardening that will be the envy of every baby boomer taking the tour.

  • Freida and Virgil Hammontree, 320 South Water Street – Using creative pathways, this garden doubles the area that is available for borders in a small urban setting An old wisteria covers a charming wooden trellis and Adirondack-style swing.

  • Louise and Andre’ Trawick, 300 South Water Street – Surrounding one of Henderson’s oldest and most historic homes is a garden brimming with a wide variety of plants. One very unique idea is to replace grassy areas with creeping thyme.

  • Pam and Mike Herron, 304 South Main Street – Sunny perennial borders and shady romantic garden rooms are featured at a home that is on the National Registry of Historic Places. A large herb and vegetable patch share space with formal plantings.

  • Lowry Igleheart-Keach, 1400 State Route 136 West – This Antebellum home is the site of one of Henderson’s oldest and most diverse gardens. Recently revitalized by the creative energy of Mrs. Igleheart-Keach, it is a must see on the tour.

  • Mary Ann and Howard Campbell, 8166 U.S. Highway 41 Alternate – A charming gazebo creates the focal point for this classic country garden. Boxwoods, hollies and century old trees lend perimeters to many lush mounded beds and perennial borders.

  • Eric Stinson, 8942 U.S. Highway 41 Alternate – This beautifully landscaped outdoor living area was created to encourage family members to develop individual interests. Areas for soccer, football, basketball, golf and swimming have been created. For anyone wanting to invest in an outdoor living area, you must see the wide variety of structures such as the outdoor kitchen, fireplace and waterfall and creek that run to a koi pond and hot tub.

  • Ruby Moon Winery, 9566 U.S. Highway 41 Alternate – One of Henderson’s real jewels is the vineyard at Ruby Moon. Tour the house garden, tasting room and gift shop. Also enjoy seeing the new event center and overnight suite. Walk along vineyard rows brimming with eight different grape varieties.
