Dawson Springs Letter Carrier Sentenced for Not Delivering Two Years' Worth of Mail

brent morseDAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. (4/23/14) ― A Dawson Springs letter carrier has been ordered to pay $14,808 in restitution to residents, a bank and two other businesses for losses suffered from his not delivering approximately 44,900 pieces of mail.

According to U.S. District Court records, Chief U.S. District Judge Joseph McKinley, Jr., sentenced William “Brent” Morse, 35, of Dawson Springs to six months in jail and six months of home incarceration, to be served consecutively, for destroying, hiding and delaying the delivery of U.S. Mail.

Federal sentencing guidelines stipulate a two-year sentence, but McKinley gave Morse less because he didn't steal from the mail pieces and only 250 mail recipients were determined to have suffered financial loss.

According to court records, Morse dumped mail for two years until March 2013, and destroyed at least 1,000 more pieces. Most were advertising circulars. Morse had placed the undelivered mail in his late mother's house and a rented storage unit.

Dawson Springs Police Capt. Craig Patterson made the arrest last year and was assisted by Chief Bill Crider, U.S. Postal Inspectors Andrew Zeman and Arty Fischer and Special Agent Jason Baker of the Office of the Inspector General, Social Security Administration. He was lodged in the Hopkins County Jail.

Morse was also convicted of theft for cashing about $32,000 in Social Security checks made out to his deceased mother.

He was placed in diversion for five years.
