kids-tennisOWENSBORO, Ky. (5/15/14) — The Owensboro Parks and Recreation Department is taking registrations for youth summer tennis lessons.

The lessons will give youth as young as four years old the opportunity to learn and master their skills as they work through the various levels of play.

Children ages four through ten years will be taught following the QuickStart program, developed by the United States Tennis Association. Quick Start utilizes specialized equipment, such as smaller racquets, slower bouncing balls, and shorter court dimensions, to enable youngsters to get into the game faster.

The program is supported by First Lady Michele Obama as part of the national “Let’s Move” campaign, encouraging children to get 60 minutes of exercise each day.

Learn to Play (for ages eleven and over) teaches forehand, backhand, and serves on full court dimensions. For the more advanced players our Intermediate program will introduce players to match play scenarios.

The lessons will take place at the Moreland Park Tennis Center and will be taught by Ginni Mather, USPTA Certified Teaching Professional.

Classes meet Monday through Thursday. Quick Start 1 will be offered 9 - 9:45 a.m. for the 4-6 age groups (fee $26 per session) and from 10 - 11 a.m. for ages 7 through 8 (fee $28 per session).

Quick Start 2, for ages 9-10, will be offered 9-10 a.m.(fee $28 per session), Learn to Play, and Intermediate classes will be offered 10-11 a.m. (fee $28 per session).

Four sessions of each level will be offered throughout the summer. Quickstart 1 will meet the weeks of June 2, June 16, July 7, and July 21. Quickstart 2, Learn to Play and Intermediate will meet the weeks of June 9, June 23, July 14, and July 28. Participants must pre-register at least 10 days in advance of the start of each session.
