Greenville Native Returns Home as SurfKY News' Muhlenberg Reporter

DSC 0614MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (5/16/14) ― Like many Muhlenberg County natives, Charles W. Riley, II, has come full circle. Born in Murray but raised in Muhlenberg, Riley has traveled and worked in many areas of the country only to return to his roots.

His parents, Charles and Linda Riley of Greenville, are well known in the county. Many remember the elder Charles Riley for his work at Bunny Bread, and many remember his mother as one of Dr. Slobodan Jugo's nurses.

A 1980 Greenville High School graduate, Riley most recently made his way from Arizona to Greenville.

“I returned to Muhlenberg to be near my parents,” said Riley.

Attaining his degree from Western Kentucky University, Riley has focused most of his career on education. He's taught in Arizona and New Mexico as well as closer to home in the Hopkins County School System. He was the special education teacher at Browning Springs Middle School in Madisonville, where he also coached sports.

Now, Riley is looking for a new adventure in his career, and has accepted a position as a full-time reporter for SurfKY News covering Muhlenberg.

“When you're a kid, you run around and talk with people all the time,” said Riley. “When you're an adult, you have to have a reason to call someone. Now, I'll be running around and talking with people. That's great.”

With his college major in history and government, Riley said he's excited about covering city, county and school board meetings as well as sporting events. He will be particularly well suited to cover school news with his wealth of experience as a former educator and his fond memories of attending school in Muhlenberg.

“I'll never forget when I was skipping down the hall in first grade at Greenville Elementary, and being caught by Principal Roma Watkins,” Riley laughed. “That's the first time I got in trouble at school.”

Riley will be looking for hometown news to share with SurfKY's readers. Story ideas can be sent to him via email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or by calling him at (270) 977-9498.
