Madisonville 9/11 Heroes Run to Honor Purple Heart Medal Recipients

travis manion found 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (8/5/14) — On Sept. 6, the Travis Manion Foundation will host a 5K race in Madisonville to unite the community to remember the sacrifices of the heroes of the September 11 attacks and in the wars since and all first responders, service members and veterans.

In its seventh year, the 9/11 Heroes Run will put on a series of races in more than 50 locations across U.S. and abroad. 2014 marks the second year of the race being held in Madisonville. Last year’s event attracted over 1,000 people to downtown Madisonville, and is on track to surpass that number in 2014.

The Madisonville 9/11 Heroes Run 5K race will take place in Downtown Madisonville 8 p.m. Sept. 6 at. There will also be a family-friendly 1M fun run/walk. The Opening Ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. and honor Purple Heart Medal recipients. The Purple Heart Medal is the nation’s oldest military medal still awarded to those wounded or killed in action. This year’s Opening Ceremony will pay homage to those service members who have served on active duty, put themselves in harm’s way, and earned the Purple Heart Medal.

“Our Purple Heart Recipients share their honor with an estimated two million other men and women, and our goal is to let them know they have not been forgotten. We will honor the lives of those who remain, and remember those who are gone Sept. 6,” says Local Race Director, Kelly Forbes.

The 9/11 Heroes Run Race Committee will be mailing invitations to Purple Heart Medal Recipients, but the Guests of Honor are all recipients. If you would like to learn more information about the 9/11 Heroes Run Opening Ceremony, or you would like to give the name of a Purple Heart Recipient, please contact Kelly Forbes at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. A portion of the proceeds from the race will benefit the Travis Manion Foundation, which offers veterans and families of the fallen unique opportunities to help them take the next step in their journeys and accomplish their personal and professional goals. A large portion of the proceeds will stay in the local community to support the Patrick Rudd Project and provide mini grants to Hopkins County First Responders for equipment and training.
