Passenger in Officer-Involved Shooting Charged in Connection with String of Greenville Home Invasions

copeland arrestMUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (8/31/14) – The names of the two people involved in a shooting altercation with a police officer Saturday in Central City have been released. While the driver is accused of trying to run over a police officer, the passenger in the vehicle has been taken into custody on a list of charges including armed robbery.

According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Jerry Knight, Jesse Hailey, 29, Mayfield, was shot by a Muhlenberg police officer after a traffic stop went awry around 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 30 in the Dollar General parking lot in Central City. Hailey is accused of trying to hit the police officer with his vehicle and of striking the police cruiser.

Hailey was taken to Deaconess Hospital for a gunshot wound or wounds but has been transferred to the University of Louisville Hospital today, according to Knight.

Knight said the passenger in the vehicle, Kristi Copeland, 33, of Wingo, Ky., was treated for abrasions and released from Muhlenberg Community Hospital Saturday. However, she has been taken into custody by the Muhlenberg County Investigative Task Force as a suspect in recent home invasions in Greenville.

According to Greenville Police Officer Wes Miller, Copeland was charged with first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and probation violation. She was one of two suspects wanted for an armed robbery in Union City, Tenn. Charges are pending for other suspects involved in the Greenville home invasions.

The Muhlenberg County Sheriff’s Office, Central City, Greenville and Powderly police departments, Pennyrile Narcotics Task Force and Kentucky State Police assisted the Muhlenberg County Investigative Task Force in the apprehension.
