UNITED STATES (6/21/12) - This week the United States joins delegations from around the world at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). Through a week of negotiations, as well as numerous side events, Rio+20 showcases the efforts of governments, businesses, and civil society to achieve sustainable development and green economic growth. Through its rich history of work on the ground, USAID is uniquely positioned to see both the complex interconnectedness and the essential nature of each of the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental.
On Thursday, June 21, USAID will co-host a side event at Rio+20 entitled “The Demographic Dividend and Sustainable Development.” USAID Deputy Administrator Don Steinberg will discuss, alongside experts in demography and reproductive health, the role population, health, and education play in sustainable development.
