MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/8/13) – As part of their regular community projects, squads from Madisonville Police Department (MPD) are hosting a food drive for local school students.
Backpack Blessings is a program that Hopkins County schools do to provide snacks and quick dinners for students registered with the Family Resource Centers for federal free and/or reduced lunches. This program was designed to ensure those students have food on weekends when lunch is not being provided to them by the school.
On Satirdau, April 13, MPD officers will be outside of Madisonville Kroger and Market Place grocery stores collecting food products donated by community citizens between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. They are encouraging shoppers to grab a little something extra for a child in the community who may be going without.
The food products will be distributed to participating schools the following Monday, April 22 after the squads sort through the items.
Lt. William Poe with MPD provided a list of suggested items they would prefer. It is suggested the items are individual servings, need no refrigeration and are simple to prepare. They will also be accepting cash donations for the shopper who isn’t sure what to purchase.
