WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (5/22/13) - Providence kindergarten teacher Rachel Wingo received a surprise Friday afternoon. The General Manager of the Providence McDonalds presented her with a check for $1,800 for the school’s Read Across America (RAA) Program.
Fifteen Providence businesses donated over $1,000 dollars total this year for Providence’s RAA, which went to purchase a book for every student in the school.
Each kindergarten through fifth grade student got a book that they could take home and keep, while the middle school classrooms were presented with copies of the Hunger Games trilogy, which they will share. The three grades will take turns reading the books, which will be worked into the classroom curriculum.
“I called Chris Combs when I heard there was a grant to apply for,” Wingo said. “We were looking to collaborate with area businesses. I had no idea we had won it.”
Combs and Principal Greg Bowles, who was notified the grant earlier in the week, had kept it a secret until Friday, the first chance they would have to make the presentation.
“All of this money will go towards next year’s Read Across America week,” Wingo said. “We can get better quality books.”
The grant was awarded by Princeton, KY based McEnaney Enterprise LLC, which operates a number of McDonalds franchises in the area.
