OWENSBORO, Ky. (6/3/13) – Nearly one-third of adults living in Western Kentucky are providing care for family members. Without even knowing it, those caregivers are at risk of heart disease, diabetes, depression and various other physical and emotional conditions. Experts warn that, left unchecked, the pressure resulting from caregiving responsibilities can lead to a potentially dangerous situation: Caregiver Distress. Newly released research shows a large number of family caregivers who suffer in silence without expressing emotions can be at greatest risk.
In response to this growing issue, the local Home Instead Senior Care® office serving Owensboro, Henderson and much of Western Kentucky has launched a public awareness campaign: Family Caregiver Stress Relief. All the information about the program can be found at www.FamilyCaregiverStressRelief.com.
Included in the program are two new tools: The Are You a Caregiver Quiz, which is designed to help a family caregiver self-identify and recognize the role of a caregiver, and the Family Caregiver Distress Assessment, adapted for the Home Instead Senior Care network by Dr. Peter Vitaliano of the University of Washington. The assessment allows caregivers to determine their risk for distress and resulting emotional and physical issues, including depression, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.
“So many spouses and adult children are unaware of their potential risk of caregiver distress because they don’t see themselves as caregivers,” said Stephen Bryson, owner of the local Home Instead Senior Care office. “These new resources enable them
to understand their role, the stresses they may face as a caregiver, and how that stress might lead to more serious health effects.”
This resource is provided for free to families across Western Kentucky by Home Instead Senior Care. For more information about Family Caregiver Stress Relief, call Home Instead Senior Care at (270) 689-2300.
