Honors College, WBKO Recognize Scholar of the Week Recipients

wku red borderBOWLING GREEN, Ky. (12/13/13) - The Honors College at WKU and WBKO-TV hosted a reception on Dec. 10 to honor the 2013-2014 Scholar of the Week recipients.

The Scholar of the Week program recognizes young scholars in southcentral Kentucky and the WBKO viewing area for their academic and extracurricular activities. The Honors College at WKU has been partnering with WBKO since 2010 on the Scholar of the Week Program.

Out of more than 300 applicants, 74 students were chosen as Scholars of the Week for the 2013-2014 academic school year and have their name, high school and accomplishments air on segments on WBKO’s “10 PM News” on Tuesdays and “AM Kentucky” on Wednesdays. Each student is invited to a reception to celebrate their achievements, recognize them individually, and reward two Scholar of the Week students with a $1,000 scholarship for WKU.

This year’s two scholarship winners are Anne Thomas Belcher, a senior at South Warren High School in Bowling Green, and Angel Semrick, a junior at South Warren High School.

Belcher has a 4.0 GPA and was a 2013 Kentucky Governor’s Scholar. She is involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including school musical productions, choir, dance, Beta Club and the National Honor Society. Belcher hopes to pursue a career in the field of mathematics and business. Upon learning she had won the scholarship drawing, Belcher’s initial reaction was surprise.

“I’ve had a lot of exposure to the Honors College these last few weeks. It’s crazy – it’s such an honor. WKU is definitely at the top of my list right now,” Belcher said.

Semrick aspires to become a kindergarten teacher after pursuing a degree in elementary education. She participates in student council, cross country, FCCLA and the speech team, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

“Scholar of the Week has provided me with a lot of opportunities,” Semrick said. “It will hopefully help me get into the Governor’s Scholar Program. This scholarship will help me pay for my books and college expenses and this process has taught me about the college application process.”

Dr. Craig T. Cobane, Executive Director of the Honors College at WKU, believes the Scholar of the Week program provides a wonderful showcase of the quality of our local school systems and it reaffirms the mission of WKU and the Honors College to propel our scholars to even greater academic and professional heights.

“These scholars represent a fantastic group of young adults who are seeking out opportunities to succeed in the classroom, on the field, in the workplace, and in any other settings,” Dr. Cobane said. “They deserve to be recognized for their achievements.”
