first respondersGREENVILLE, Ky. (4/17/14) — The Muhlenberg County Safety Task Force will sponsor a Safety Awareness Day Saturday, April 26, in downtown Greenville.

According to one of the group's members, Sharon Davis, MCSTF was formed in response to the tragic January fire that killed nine members of the Chad Watson family in Depoy. The cause of that fire was determined to be baseboard heaters

"The group was started after the Watson family fire," Davis told SurfKY News. "The Leadership Muhlenberg group wanted to do something to bring attention to fire safety in the county. We talked with Alyssa Manning of the Felix Martin Foundation regarding a grant, and she suggested we get in touch with first responders in the area. We found out that several of them were also interested in promoting a safety awareness event. There is a representative on the task force from every first responder department in the county. All of the police and fire departments are included. We will also feature educational booths on bicycle safety, drug safety and a prescription drug drop off box, boating safety and hunting safety as well."

Davis said there would be numerous prizes at the event, a performance by magician Doug King, and the group Street Heat will perform on stage as well. Street Heat is made up of first responders from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. The group has performed in Muhlenberg County several times in the past, and present an anti-drug, anti-gang message mixed with current music and family favorites.

Davis noted there will also be first responder booths, free smoke alarms, weather radios available, and prizes will include a flat screen TV., Xbox One, an iPad and safety kits.

In case of rain the event will be held at the Central City Convention Center.
