McCormick: Henderson County Won’t Raise Taxes This Year

Henderson Seal 01 300HENDERSON, Ky. (7/18/13) – Henderson County property owners got a bit of good news at the annual “State of the County” address today.

“We’re not going to raise taxes,” Henderson County Judge/Executive Donald “Hugh” McCormick told the audience at a luncheon during his “State of the County” address at the Henderson Fine Arts Center. “We’ll continue to work with what we’ve got… and live within our means.”

McCormick said the county has a healthy surplus of approximately $6.5 million, and that he expects that amount to reach $8 million before the county gets to a point where spending some of it may be necessary. This, he noted, despite some setbacks within the county such as the reduction of the number of inmates at the Henderson County Detention Center and the impact it had on the county’s trustees program, where minimum security inmates can participate in community service to reduce their sentence. He said HB 463, which would allow for such prisoners to be released early in order to save the state money, created a difficult situation for communities where detention centers suddenly had a large quantity of empty beds. In Henderson, he said, the impact for non-profits that used the work program was about $1 million total.

He noted that despite the reduction in state funding, the county saw an 18 percent increase in jail services funding from the federal government over the last year.

Also during his address, McCormick commended the work of other public officials, including Henderson County Sheriff Ed Brady, County Clerk Renesa Abner, and County Attorney Steve Gold. He told the audience a new building will be named for Bill Griffin, a long-time employee of the county, and that the Tri-State Recycling Center based in Henderson has generated about $50,000 in revenue for the community.

Prior to McCormick’s address, Henderson Chamber of Commerce President Brad Schneider told the audience about ongoing plans to merge multi-county economic development agency Northwest Kentucky Forward with the Henderson/Henderson County Chamber of Commerce. Schneider, who has been leading both organizations, said the merger is expected to be completed by November 1.

Next Thursday, July 25, Henderson Mayor Steve Austin is scheduled to present the “State of the City” address. SurfKY News will provide coverage of that event as well.
