octcs building 2 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/8/13) – Owensboro Community and Technical College’s Workforce Solutions department will partner with the Discover STEM: Generation Innovation grant team to offer two Career Craze youth camps this summer.

The camps – one for middle schools students and one for high school students - are funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the Alcoa Foundation.

Middle school students ages 12 and older may attend Career Craze from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 29 and 30 and from 8 a.m. to noon on May 31. The middle school camp will focus on energy.

Participants will design, build and program robots using sound engineering principles in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). They will learn how energy is produced, distributed and used at home and in the workplace. They also will tour a local industry, Domtar, to observe its self-sustaining generator and alternative power sources.

High school students may attend Career Craze from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 5 and 6 and from 8 a.m. to noon on June 7. Careers in advanced manufacturing will be the focus of the camp.

Participants will experience the real world applications of today’s advanced manufacturing facilities. They will design and build robots to compete in challenges. They will tour Kimberly-Clark and observe science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts in action.
