CALLOWAY COUNTY, Ky. (6/24/13) – The Calloway County Middle School Future Problem Solving (FPS) Team, which is a component of the academic team, placed fourth in the state Governor’s Cup competition in March, which earned the team an invitation to the FPS International Conference (IC) held June 6-9 at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. Among those in attendance were teams from 13 countries (Hong Kong, India, Korea, and China i.e.) as well as 45 U.S. states. The topic of focus for the international competition was “Global Status of Women.” For the Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) team component, the following students were participants: Lauren Hale, Brianna Madden, Sierra Todd, and Claire Umstead. These students were given a future scene, or scenario, based on the IC topic and were expected to complete a booklet comprised of 16 challenges, an underlying problem, 16 solutions, criteria, and a final action plan in a two-hour time period.
Additionally, this group then presented their action plan to a panel of judges once their booklet had been completed. This group of young ladies was very competitive in their component, as they were awarded the distinction of being a GIPS team finalist, placing them just outside the top ten in the world against 68 total teams in their division.
Mallory Hlava also attended IC and competed in the Multiple-Affiliate Global Issues Competition (MAGIC). Mallory was placed with students from different FPS affiliate programs in the U.S. and expected to complete a booklet with her teammates also based on the topic “Global Status of Women.” Mallory’s team was comprised of students from Florida, Minnesota, and Ohio.
This international event marked the end to a very successful season of the Calloway County Middle School FPS Team! The season included four championship titles and a finalist in an international competition—placing them above other countries. The team is coached by Abigail Spann and Scott and Whitney Pile.
