HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. - Fred Ulane Sandefer, 93, Hopkinsville, Ky passed away at 6:45 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2013 at his residence of natural causes.
A native of Weakley County, TN born March 24, 1920, he was the son of the late Calvin Monroe and Vergie Brundige Sandefer. He was a graduate of Martin (TN) High School and earned both Bachelors and Masters degrees from Murray State University.
He had an illustrious military career serving in the United States Marine Corps during WWII. He participated in action with forces in New Zealand, Guadacanal and Guam during the Pacific Campaign. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the Presidential Unit Citation.
After his military career, Fred worked for a number of years in administrative level positions in various industries. He lastly developed and taught in Middle School Industrial Arts programs.
He was a charter member of Southside Church of Christ. His wife, Tommie Lou Newberry Sandefer, passed away in September, 1994.
Mr. Sandefer is survived by one son, Joe Sandefer and his wife Namjoo, Hopkinsville, one daughter, Leisa Sandefer Faughn and her husband Don, Murray, KY, two brothers; Deward Sandefer, Collierville, TN and James Sandefer of Martin, TN, one sister, Jean Travis, Marietta, GA and four grandchildren; William Sandefer, Chris Faughn, Carley Faughn and Jae Lee.
Graveside services with military honors will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Riverside Cemetery conducted by Terry Alan Jones and Walter Edwards. There will be no visitation. Hughart & Beard Funeral Home in Hopkinsville is in charge of the arrangements.
