computer school1 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/18/13) - The Kentucky Dataseam Initiative has been successfully working with districts all over the state, including Owensboro Public Schools, to provide their schools with new Apple computers in exchange for research capability for the University of Louisville’s Brown Cancer.
 
Since 2006, the program has placed 167 Kentucky schools with 176,000 new Apple devices. They have also given out $1.8 million in college scholarships. The program works with cancer researchers from the University of Louisville, and currently discovered over 30 potential drugs to aid cancer patients, according to the Dataseam website.
 
DCPS proposed a plan at Tuesday’s Board of Education luncheon to try to implement the program into several of their schools. Tony Sparks pitched the idea saying that the initiative would aid with research using the school’s networking power and extra technology processing to analyze data, but it will also benefit students and teachers in the district, as well.
 
“We need additional resource devices in some buildings,” Sparks said.
 
Some board members voiced concerns saying that the network would breach the confidentiality of the students, but Sparks insists that this would not be a problem. Finances for the project were not thoroughly discussed but Sparks says that there are left-over funds that could be used. The idea will be discussed in more detail and voted upon in an upcoming meeting.
 
The next DCPS Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 19, at 6 p.m.
