New Year, Fresh Start: Teas May Increase Body's Immunity

tea 300CENTRAL CITY, Ky. (12/26/13) Anyone who has been in a grocery store lately, has likely noticed a huge increase in the varieties of teas.

Helen Tomplin of Cornucopia 2, located in the Central City Apple House Shopping Center, says a wide variety of teas and smoothies may be a great way to ring in the new year.

“Oolong tea helps fight bacteria and infections in the body, and also has cardio vascular benefits.” Tomplin said. “However, it does contain some caffeine."

Tomplin says that one caffeine-free alternative is lemon balm tea.

“It is very relaxing, it relives anxiety and is a great way to deal with stress.“ Tomplin said.

Another tea that is gaining attention, according Tomplin, is Yerba Mate.

“Yerba Mate is great for increasing your energy level, promotes weight loss, relieves allergies and is a great coffee replacement.” Tomplin said.

Rooibos tea (or “red tea”) contains many healing property as well, according to Tomplin.

“These include use as an anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and it’s full of vitamins and minerals.”

So, with all these teas flooding the market, why does green tea seem to be on every aisle in the grocery store these days?

“Green tea just seems to have so many healing properties, it’s creating its own market,” said Tomplin. “It is full of anti-oxidants, boosts your immune system, burns fat, and helps to reduce blood pressure. We have seen a huge increase in our sales of green tea, along with the others I mentioned. They just have so much more to offer nutritionally than coffee, in many cases.”

Tomplin also noted that with the new year approaching, Cornucopia 2 has seen an increase in sales of herbal detox products.

“This time of year a lot of people are looking to make a fresh start, and an herbal detox is a great way to do that. We stock Garden Of Life brand which is full of vegetables and fruits, and comes in a wide variety of blends. Another plus is the fact it contains no genetically modified organisms,” she said.

Another item that seems to be creating its own market is the all natural smoothie.

“People love smoothies, but often just don’t have the time to mix in all the ingredients,” said Tomplin. “We now have Garden Of Life smoothies in a powder form. They are packed full of natural vegetables and fruits. So you just put it in a blender with some water, the fruit of your choice and it’s pretty much hassle-free. People are really finding all-natural smoothies to be a great, healthy alternative to the many processed beverages we've become so used to.”

Editor’s note: Always consult your family doctor before making any changes to your diet.
