Frances Gilliland Thomas, of Henderson, KY formerly of Hopkinsville, KY

HOPKINSVILLE, KY - Frances Gilliland Thomas, of Henderson, KY formerly of Hopkinsville, KY, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2012, in Henderson, KY of natural causes.

She was faculty advisor for the college’s literary publication, The Round Table, and she founded and established Round Table Park, located on the campus of Hopkinsville Community College.

During her career at Hopkinsville Community College, she served as Chairwoman of the Humanities Division; Chairman of the Fine Arts Festival; Chair of Performers of International Festival; a member of the College Advisory Board; Faculty Advisor to the Student Government; speaker to the Symposium on the life and works of Robert Penn Warren, and conducted many seminars. She led Great Books Discussion Groups.

She was recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Award for the development of Round Table Park; Great Teacher Award from the University of KY Alumni Association; and Professor Emeritus. She served on the Board of Community Concert Association and Library Board. She was the recipient of the Hopkinsville City-County Environmental Protection and Improvement Commission’s “Life Involvement for Environment” award for spearheading the development of Round Table Park on the Campus of Hopkinsville Community College. She was also the recipient of Austin Peay State University’s Alumni-Admissions Service Award.

She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, E.W. Thomas, Jr; her parents, Robert and Mary Belle Gilliland; her brother, Thomas Gilliland; her sister, Sherlene Cansler, and a nephew, Tommy Gilliland.

Survivors include her friend and companion, Alfred (Bo Bo) Cravens, Hopkinsville, Ky.; three daughters: Pamela Thomas, Henderson, Ky.; Debbie James, Peachtree City, Ga.; and Francie Thomas, Ellijay, Ga.; a grandson, Clay James and his wife Patricia, Atlanta, Ga.; and two great-grandsons, Thomas and Andrew James, Atlanta, Ga.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Maddux Fuqua Hinton Funeral Home with the Dr. Brooks Major officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2012 from noon – 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
