Hillard D. Thorpe, 91, a resident of Bardstown, KY, and formerly of Hopkinsville, KY

CHRISTIAN COUNTY, KY - Hillard D. Thorpe, 91, a resident of Bardstown,  KY, and formerly of Hopkinsville,  KY, passed away there at Flaget Memorial Hospital at 8:12 a.m. Thursday, September 6, 2012 after a brief illness.

A native of Hornbeak, Tennessee born May 28, 1921, he was the son of the late Milton H. and Jewel Orr Thorpe.

His first wife and the mother of his children, Margaret “Peggy” Thorpe, passed away August 3, 1995.

Mr. Thorpe served his country proudly as a member of the United States Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of Captain. He was a veteran of WWII and participated in the occupation of Japan and the invasion of Pelilu.

He was a Special Agent for the F.B.I. for 30 years serving 15 of those years in Hopkinsville. His cities of service with the F.B.I. included: St. Louis, MO, Seattle, WA, Philadelphia, PA, Washington, DC, Louisville, KY and Hopkinsville, KY. While in Hopkinsville, he served as a firearms instructor and had been a Redcoat volunteer at Jennie Stuart Medical Center.

After his retirement from the F.B.I., he moved to Gulfport, MS where he worked as the Director of Security for Hancock Banks for 15 years.

He was a member of Southside Church of Christ in Hopkinsville.

He played football at MSU and was a fullback and linebacker for the 1941 SEC Championship team.

Survivors include his wife, Sara Lee Lacy Thorpe, Bardstown,  KY, one son, Dr. Bob Thorpe, Greeneville, Tennessee, two daughters; Katy Thorpe Wood, Cincinnati, Ohio and Meg Thorpe Turner, Nashville, Tennessee, three stepsons; English Lacy, Hopkinsville,  KY, Mac Lacy, Bardstown,  KY and John Lacy, Henryville, Indiana, and one stepdaughter, Ann Tandy Lacy of Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 4:00 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Southside Church of Christ in Hopkinsville conducted by Walter Edwards. Visitation with the family will be from 3:00 p.m. until the service time at the church. Hughart & Beard Funeral Home in Hopkinsville is in charge of arrangements.

A private burial with military honors will be at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons Jack Turner, Will Turner, Rob Thorpe, Arthur Wood and Alex Wood along with his great-nephew Clint Joiner.
